About Japanese Symbols
Japanese Symbols is a free tool for copying and pasting Japanese characters — hiragana, katakana, kanji, kaomoji, and meaningful words and phrases — for use anywhere online: social media bios, usernames, tattoos, chats, or just to learn a little bit of the language along the way.
Why we built this
Typing Japanese characters isn't straightforward if you don't have a Japanese keyboard installed, and looking up the meaning behind a single kanji can mean digging through several different dictionaries. We wanted one place where you could find a character, understand what it actually means, and copy it in a single tap — without ads that get in the way of the tool itself.
What you'll find here
- Hiragana & Katakana — the complete phonetic character sets, including dakuten and small kana
- Kanji — popular characters with clear, verified meanings, plus a full jōyō kanji reference
- Kaomoji — Japanese-style text emoticons, ready to paste as-is
- Words & phrases — Japanese words and idioms that don't always have a direct English equivalent, explained accurately
Accuracy matters to us
Japanese is a language with real nuance, and getting a meaning wrong isn't harmless — people use these symbols for tattoos and personal expression, not just decoration. We regularly review and correct the content on this site, and we take it seriously when something needs fixing. If you're a Japanese speaker and spot an error anywhere on the site, we want to know — see the contact details below.
Free, always
Every symbol and tool on this site is free to use, with no sign-up and no membership required. If ads help keep the lights on, we try to keep them out of the way of the tool itself.
